Illuminating Artistry Through "REVELATION"

Art has the power to transport its beholders into realms unseen and unfelt, transcending the tangible and entering the spiritual. This Fall, Constantinos Avraam gifts Cyprus with such an experience through his latest visual exhibition, REVELATION - ΑΠΟΚΑΛΥΨΗ - İLHAM

L'Officiel Cyprus had the chance to sit down with Constantinos Avraam for an exclusive interview, shedding light on the depths of his inspirations and his artistic journey.

How has your meditation process influenced your use of shapes, colors, and the human form to depict moments of revelation?

Constantinos Avraam: "I will try to explain it as simple as possible. While meditating on the meaning of the word and I get glimpses of colors and shapes, it is usually from the mixture of specific knowledge I have accumulated concerning philosophy, psychology, color theory/psychology, "sacred" geometry, mythology, astrology, and the occult in general, that come to my awareness intuitively based on the specific word I am meditating on. After the initial expression of the basic shapes/colors I get from the meditation, I might then elaborate more consciously on further developing the composition, based again on the aforementioned information I have available while still being aware of any intuitive ideas that might pop up. It's a long process of just building up slowly the shapes/colors until it feels "right"."

You've studied both 3D animation and Fine Arts in San Francisco before returning to Cyprus. How have these diverse experiences influenced your current body of work?

Constantinos Avraam: "To be fair, I have only been through the initial stages of my Animation studies, so I don't feel it has a strong impact on my current body of work, although I'm sure there is something I got from it but still not fully aware of. Maybe it is my interest to try and integrate the illusion of motion and space in my work! Interesting question there. On the other hand, my Fine Arts studies just gave me the very basis that any artist needs in order to develop properly into their own style. I can never be thankful enough to my parents who gave me this great opportunity to learn the basics from such a great school that Academy of Arts University in San Francisco is. Amazing professors and curriculums."

In what ways has the cultural awakening in Cyprus inspired or challenged your artistic expressions?

Constantinos Avraam: "It was a visceral and simple decision: If I was ever going to develop into an accomplished artist, I would do it back home with all the people I met who had the passion and the drive to further establish the scene on the island, which I might add, was lacking. I am not saying this as a criticism though. Regarding Cyprus's recent history, we have barely established our very own sovereign institution, so expecting to have a developed art scene this early is rather unrealistic. So, in my mind, I am just contributing to the inevitable and I am happy to do so."
