Bags with the Names of Fashion Icons
The Kelly - Hermes
What was once the Dispatch Bag was officially renamed in the 1960s, after a famous photograph by Grace Kelly, The Kelly. The Princess of Monaco was trying to hide her pregnancy and protect her rounded belly with a Dispatch Bag. At the time, the photos were published in all magazines. An unexpected publicity stunt for the French luxury brand, which therefore decided to rename this bag after the one that made it iconic.
The Alexa Bag - Mulberry
The fashion icon, who was the “It Girl” of the 2010s, had a bag named after her like any other icon. The Mulberry brand found that she was often seen with a vintage version of their Elkington bag. It has been slightly modified, updated, and simply renamed “Alexa Bag.” Just like her, the bag has been described as the “it bag” of the 2010s and has been recently relaunched, as success and style from Alexa Chung, never seem to fade.
Lady Dior - Dior
Urban legend says that it was thanks to the former First Lady of France, Bernadette Chirac, who wanted to offer a bag to the princess during a political meeting, that this adventure began. Previously called the Chouchou bag, it was truly intended for Princess Diana. Small, elegant and full of beautiful little details, the princess was often seen with her Chouchou. It was then officially renamed Lady Dior, by Dior, in her honor. Again, a sign that the People's Princess was also a fashion icon and a trendsetter.
Le Birkin - Hermes
Perhaps the best known of all, the Birkin. Named after icon Jane Birkin, actress, singer, model and possibly the most famous example of a handbag bearing a person's name. Almost as famous as her, the Birkin was actually created from a collaboration between Jean-Louis Damas and Jane. They met and over the course of the conversations she told him that she never had a practical bag and that they should make one. Jean-Louis, then president of Hermès, proposed that they do it together, so she would have the perfect bag and adapted to her needs. This is how the most It bag of all was designed. She recently admitted in an interview that she did not earn any commission from the sale of the bag that bears her name.
The Jackie - Gucci
Revisited by Alessandro Michel through his muse, Harry Styles, the Jackie was everywhere and on everyone this summer. The famous Gucci bag has a similar history to that of Lady Dior. Jackie Kennedy, the former First Lady of the United States, had been so often photographed with this bag, then the Fifties Constance, that Gucci decided to rename it the Jackie. The small bag is today the most famous of the brand. The ultimate prestige for a fashion icon, but given the bag's fame today, it is undeniable that Jackie Kennedy is truly the timeless icon of fashion.
